Florida authorities say George Zimmerman, whose acquittal in the death of Trayvon Martin sparked national controversy, has been arrested for allegedly throwing a wine bottle at his girlfriend.  The Seminole County Sheriff’s Office says 31-year-old Zimmerman was arrested for aggravated assault in Lake Mary about 10 p.m. Friday.

Zimmerman was acquitted in 2013 of a 2nd degree murder charge for shooting unarmed teenager, Trayvon Martin.  The Justice Department has not concluded its civil rights investigation.  Zimmerman successfully showed the jury that he shot Martin in self-defense during a confrontation in 2012.

Details on the case were not released.  Since his acquittal, Zimmerman has had several run-ins with law enforcement, good and bad.

He was arrested on allegations of aggravated assault, battery, and criminal mischief after his then-girlfriend alleged that he pointed a gun at her during an argument.  Samantha Scheibe stopped cooperating with law enforcement and the charges were dropped.

Zimmerman was also accused by his estranged wife of smashing an iPad during an argument at the home they shared.  Shellie Zimmerman told a 911 dispatcher that he was armed, but later changed her story.  No charges were filed due to lack of evidence.

Zimmerman also saved a family trapped in an overturned SUV four days after his acquittal.  Out of fear of being associated with their rescuer, they refused to speak publicly about it extensively.
