The judge in West Virginia who is already facing several federal conspiracy charges after allegedly plotting to frame his secretary’s husband in various criminal schemes has been charged in another conspiracy case.  Mingo County Circuit Judge Michael Thornsbury allegedly conspired, this time, with other elected officials to cover up the “illegal drug use and other misconduct” of late Mingo County Sheriff Eugene Crum.

A Mingo County drug defendant earlier this year began to provide the FBI with information about Crum, according to U.S. Attorney Booth Goodwin.  Crum learned that the informant and his attorney were providing information on him to the FBI and as a result, Crum, Thornsbury, and other elected officials allegedly “conspired” to protect Crum and stop the informant (referred to as G.W.).

“They arranged to offer G.W. [a] favorable plea deal if he would fire his attorney…and replace him with an attorney chosen by Crum,” the press release said.

Thornsbury has pled not guilty to federal conspiracy charges that stem from several alleged plots to falsely implicate his secretary’s husband after she broke off an affair with him.  His trial date is set for October 15th.  He is out of jail on $10,000 bond.  Documents allege a 5-year vendetta to imprison an innocent man over jealousy.  He allegedly plotted to plant drugs in the man’s car, recruit a state trooper to arrest him on bogus theft charges, and persuade a police officer to arrest him on fake assault and battery charges.

Tennis Maynard is accused of shooting Crum twice in the head on April 3 as the sheriff ate lunch in his parked vehicle near the courthouse.  Maynard is charged with first-degree murder, attempted murder and fleeing with reckless indifference. Jury selection begins December 9th.
