Jury selection began Friday in the murder trial of Austin Sigg, 18, who is accused of murdering and dismembering Jessica Ridgeway, 10.  Jury selection will continue Tuesday.  Sigg’s defense attorneys have filed a change of venue request, arguing intensive media coverage has deprived Sigg of the right to a fair trial.  The judge said that motion would be decided after seeing whether the jury pool is large enough.

According to prosecutors, Sigg confessed after his mother turned him in to police.  Sigg is charged with 18 counts and faces life in prison with a possibility of parole after 40 years in connection with Ridgeway’s murder and an attack on a jogger at Ketner Lake.

Sigg was 17 at the time he allegedly committed the crime.  The trial is scheduled to begin October 3rd.  The trial is estimated to last about 3 weeks.  Jessica was kidnapped on her way to school Oct. 5, 2012.  An autopsy found that she died from asphyxiation.

Tragic. The sociopath behaves in such a way because he holds the power of life and death over his victims. If more study was devoted to what made sociopaths “tick,’ instead of reactive lynch mobs we might curtail such tragedies.
