The Maricopa County Attorney’s Office says it has no political motives in its decision to retry a woman charged with killing her 4-year-old son.  The agency denied such motivations when responding to Debra Milke’s request to disqualify them from the case.  Authorities say Milke dressed her son in his favorite outfit and told him he was going to see Santa Claus at a mall in 1989. He was later fatally shot by two men.  She was convicted and sent to death row.  More than two decades later, her conviction was overturned because the prosecution had withheld impeachment evidence about their star witness, a detective.  Detective Saldate had a history of misconduct including lying about confessions that never happened.  Milke has always maintained her innocence and denied ever confessing.  Milke contends the Sept. 30 retrial is likely being pursued, in part, for political reasons.
